It would be really hard for me to move a mountain. It would take a lot of money, a lot of explosives, a lot of workers, a lot of dump trucks, a ton of work, and an enormous amount of time.
God could move that mountain in an instant. Just ask anyone who has lived through an earthquake. As an example, in September of this year a new island was raised in the Arabian Sea when an earthquake hit Pakistan, revealing God’s power to move mountains up or down in an instant. God is mighty.
In Matthew chapter 17, verses 14-21, we read of a time when the disciples were walking with Jesus. A man approached Jesus and asked for his son to be healed (his son suffered with many seizures.) Jesus healed the boy immediately, displaying Jesus’ power to heal in an instant. But don’t miss this: in the New Testament, Jesus’ healing miracles are always pointing to something deeper; they always point to the fact that Jesus is God’s Son, the One sent to save us from our sins.
The disciples wondered why they couldn’t heal the boy. Hear Jesus’ reply:
“Because of your little faith,” He told them. “For I assure you: If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:20-21)
The point of Jesus’ words was not some name-it-and-claim-it ministry of moving masses of dirt, rock and trees. The point of Jesus’ words was they they should trust in Him, follow Him, believe in Him, pray and fast, and have faith in Him to do things that are humanly impossible. And the most important thing on God’s agenda is for people to be spiritually healed, for them to be saved.
The same God who can move mountains is mighty to save.
The Lord your God is with you,
the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)
So maybe there is someone you have been praying for. Keep on praying. Maybe you need to skip a meal to intensely pray for them to be saved (this is called fasting). And you should be ready to have a conversation with them whenever the Lord opens the door. But most of all you need to believe – I mean really believe – that Jesus can save them in an instant. God is mighty to save!
Everyone needs compassion
A love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Saviour
The hope of nations
Savior he can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save
Forever author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave, Jesus conquered the grave
So take me as you find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender
Savior he can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save
Forever author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave, Jesus conquered the grave
Shine your light and let the whole world see
We’re singing for the glory of the risen king Jesus!
