The Light of the World

The news we read online and hear on TV is not always good news. The reporters are talking about the government shutdown, looming debt crisis, wars around the world, leaders who won’t work together, crime in local communities and more. It could get you depressed and discouraged.

However, if you know that God is in control, then you will not be overwhelmed. You know that there is hope. You know there is light at the end of the tunnel. You know that God is at work. Even in the midst of darkness there is light.

Jesus is the light of the world.

One day Jesus encountered a man who was physically in the dark. He was blind. He was hopeless to ever gain sight. He had never seen stunning sunsets. Or majestic mountains. Or his parents. Or his friends. He had been blind from birth. But Jesus changed his life forever. Jesus gave sight to this blind man.

  • The man was blind
  • He believed in Jesus
  • He was healed
  • He was changed forever!

As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. His disciples questioned Him: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him. We must do the works of Him who sent Me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

After He said these things He spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. “Go,” He told him, “wash in the pool of Siloam” ( which means “Sent”). So he left, washed, and came back seeing.

His neighbors and those who formerly had seen him as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the man who sat begging?” Some said, “He’s the one.” “No,” others were saying, “but he looks like him.” He kept saying, “I’m the one!” Therefore they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened?”

He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So when I went and washed I received my sight.” (John 9:1-11)

God is still in the life-changing business. Jesus’ ability to heal this man physically demonstrates his ability to heal us spiritually. When we realize personally that we are in spiritual darkness and that we can’t do anything to spiritually see, we will turn to the one who is the light of the world: Jesus. And just like Jesus took some dirt, spit on it and put it on the man’s eyes (a middle-school boy’s favorite part of this story!), Jesus will spiritually work in us to open up our eyes spiritually.

When the light of the world comes to live in your life, you are changed forever: from darkness to light, from spiritual death to spiritual life, from being an enemy of God to being a friend of God, from being lost to being found. A “found” person is someone who has received the grace of God found only in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

Already this week I have heard more stories of people who are coming to faith in Jesus Christ. After one man with a powerful testimony of life-transformation (you talk about from darkness to light!) was baptized on Sunday at Hebron Church to publicly profess his faith in Christ [see his baptism HERE], one of his friends got saved. And that evening, that friend led another person to saving faith in Christ!

And tonight at church eight teenagers trusted in Christ as Lord and Savior. Wow!

This afternoon I heard about a man from our church who drove more than 500 miles to visit a family member who is very sick. The man had the opportunity to lead his cousin to saving faith in Jesus Christ today!

When the light of the world comes to live in your life, you are a brand new creation. God changes you from the inside out. He gives you peace, joy, courage, perseverance, forgiveness, mercy, love, grace and much, much more. He gives you purpose and victory and confidence and new desires, desires that honor him.

You may wonder why some things have happened to you in life. Surely the man who was born blind wondered why he was born that way. From a medical perspective, there were causes to explain the “why” he was born blind. People wondered if the man if his sin or his parents sin may have caused the blindness, some sort of punishment from God. Jesus assured them that was not the cause of the blindness.

According to Jesus, “why” this man was born this way was because God had a purpose and a plan for this man’s life. God knew that the man’s life could best glorify God if the power of Jesus was displayed in and through his life. And the same is true for you.

You may or may not need to be physically healed, but every person enters life needing to be spiritually healed. And when you are spiritually healed by Jesus Christ, your life is changed forever. Follow him and he will light your path. He will show you every step you should take.

Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105)

Jesus is the light of the world.
