Christmas: What We Learn from Mary’s Song

Mary was just a teenager when God revealed to her that she would be the mother of the promised Messiah. God sent an angel to deliver this news, and Mary was overwhelmed. She knew that it was physically impossible for her to conceive a child. But the angel assured Mary that nothing is impossible with God. God would miraculously place His Son in Mary’s womb.

Luke 1:37
For nothing will be impossible with God.

If God wants to do it, He will get it done. In His way, in His timing, He will get it done. Trust Him. Believe in Him. Obey Him.

A short time after God spoke to her through the angel, Mary traveled to visit her relative Elizabeth, who herself had recently experienced God working in her life in great ways. While there, Mary sings a song to the Lord. This song is preserved in the pages of the Bible.

Read Mary’s song (below) and think about these questions:

  1. What does Mary’s song teach us about the Lord?
  2. What does Mary’s song teach us about Mary’s faith in the Lord?
  3. How do the truths in the song impact my faith in Christ?

Mary’s Song:

Luke 1:46-55
And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,

because He has looked with favor on the humble condition of His slave.

Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed,

because the Mighty One has done great things for me,

and His name is holy.

His mercy is from generation to generation

on those who fear Him.

He has done a mighty deed with His arm;

He has scattered the proud

because of the thoughts of their hearts;

He has toppled the mighty from their thrones

and exalted the lowly.

He has satisfied the hungry with good things

and sent the rich away empty.

He has helped His servant Israel,

mindful of His mercy,

just as He spoke to our ancestors,

to Abraham and his descendants forever.

To me, words like “God my Savior” and “the Mighty one” and “greatness of the Lord” and “mercy” just jump off the page. God is all of those things and more. He is holy. He helps people. He satisfies the hungry with good things. He is Savior. He is Lord.

Mary had great faith in God. She was humble, obedient, reflective, grateful. She felt blessed because of God’s great work in her life. She took time in her song to reflect on how God had been at work through her people for centuries. Mary’s faith in God inspires us to have faith in Him.

The truths we hear in Mary’s song impact our faith in Christ today. The same great God who did amazing things in Mary’s life is still at work today. Jesus is the Savior, offering eternal life to all who put their faith & trust in Him. God is the Mighty One who meets needs and shows His mercy to people.

The question I have for you is this: are you humble, and willing to do whatever it is the Lord wants you to do?

Spend time alone with Him during the Christmas season, in prayer and reading His Word. Attend worship services and special events with your local church, connecting with the Lord through music, drama, teaching, and in other ways. Take some time to strengthen a friendship you have with someone, encouraging them to be all that God wants them to be.

And be ready to be amazed. God is at work. He is the Mighty One.

And as God speaks to you in your mind and your heart, do what He asks you to do. Live a life of Christ-honoring faith. Be loving, kind, forgiving, holy, serving, helping, more. He will help you. Nothing is impossible with God.
