Messages bombard you every day. How do you know what is the truth?
In the Christmas movie Elf, the lead character Buddy the Elf walks through Manhattan for the first time, taking in all of the sights. He notices a sign on the window of a cafe and enters to congratulate the cafe owners. He says, “Congratulations!! You did it!! World’s best cup of coffee!!” See, the sign on the window said, “World’s Best Cup of Coffee.” Buddy didn’t realize that it was a marketing strategy, the opinion of the cafe owner, or an outright lie trying to get people in the door. He took one sip of the coffee, and then spit it out of his mouth because it tasted so bad. The cafe certainly did NOT have the world’s best cup of coffee, even if that was their claim.
With the messages that bombard you every day, how do you discern truth from lies?
Don’t be deceived by the things of the world, which are lusts that will pass away. Three big categories of temptations are lusts of the flesh, lusts of the eyes, and pride in one’s possessions (aka, the pride of life). The worldly way is to feed these lusts, and temptations are everyone. Don’t be deceived. These things will pass away. Look no further than the new season’s line of clothing to show you that what people think they MUST have now (thinking it will make them happy) will be hanging in the closet, thrown in the trash or given to charity when they go out of style. Lusts never satisfy.
1 John 2:15-17
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions — is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.
Don’t be deceived by the false teaching of antichrists, those who reject who Jesus is. If you ask people in our country who Jesus is, most will have an opinion about him. Many will acknowledge that he was a kind and moral person, a good teacher, a religious leader, or even a prophet. However, too many people will stop short of declaring him to be the Son of God who came to earth to provide THE way of salvation. Those who reject Jesus say that he is not the Christ (Messiah, Anointed One). And those who try to influence others to reject Jesus are truly against (anti-) Christ. Don’t be deceived by these antichrists. Rather, read the Bible and learn who Jesus is. Trust in him as Lord and Savior of your life because truly he is the Christ.
1 John 2:18-23
18 Children, it is the last hour. And as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. By this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I have not written to you because you don’t know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father as well.
DO remain close to Jesus, so that you will:
- love God
1 John 2:24-25
24 What you have heard from the beginning is to remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he himself made to us: eternal life.
37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.38 This is the greatest and most important command.
- discern truth
1 John 2:26-27
26 I have written these things to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, his anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as it has taught you, remain in him.
- be ready for Jesus’ return
1 John 2:28
28 So now, little children, remain in him so that when he appears we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
- live righteously
1 John 2:29
29 If you know that he is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
