Jesus was not generous for his own sake. He did not give of himself as a point of pride or self-promotion. He didn’t even give just because it made him feel good. He gave of his treasure, time and talents for two reasons: to bring glory to God and to meet real needs.
Here is what he taught about glorifying God. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
And here is an example of him seeing the people and their needs: “As He stepped ashore, He saw a huge crowd, felt compassion for them, and healed their sick.” (Matthew 14:14)
Jesus saw the crowds. And with laser-like focus he saw the individuals within the crowd. He saw their needs. He knew how to help each person. And he gave generously to meet their needs.
When you see a crowd of people at the mall, at your school, at your business, in your neighborhood, at the ball field, or anywhere else, do you look with laser-like focus at their needs? Pray that the Lord would help you to see people the way he sees them. And then respond to them the way that he would.
