Great things that happen in homes: LOVE

Some of the greatest of life’s events happen in homes.

In this series of posts, I’ll highlight some of them. I’ll pick one for each post, and if you’ve got one to suggest for me to write about in a future post, leave a comment below.

Love! A home is a place to love and to be loved.

Parents show love to their children and kids love their parents. When our kids were little, I would pick each of them up and whisper for them to squeeze my neck and hold on. I would say out loud, “How much does Daddy love you?” and then I would open my arms as wide as I could and scream, “Thiiiiisssss much!” They would hang on for dear life!

In their home, a husband and wife show love to one another, and the home is the central place where they demonstrate love, grace and encouragement to one another on a daily basis.

So… today (and every day) make sure that you tell each person in your home that you love them. And, show them that you love them in very practical ways: spending time with them, words of appreciation, meaningful gifts, serving them, or physical touch. Let them know that you love them.

If you are a person of faith like me, the home is a great place for reading the Bible, talking and listening to God in prayer, and growing in your faith and love for His Son, Jesus.

As you think about the physical spaces and the decor in your home, how does your home demonstrate the love you have for those who mean the most to you? Here are some examples:

  • Breakfast nook where a couple enjoys time together before the kids get up in the morning
  • Pictures of family vacations displayed around the house
  • Warm family room where mom and dad play with the kids and the kids play with each other
  • Master suite a sanctuary for mom and dad to spend intimate time together
  • Since the kitchen is the new family room, an open floor plan allows love and laughter to be shared with everyone even while preparing meals
  • Decorations around the house with phrases or verses that communicate love

1 John 3:11
11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another…

John 13:34
34 “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another.” –Jesus

1 Peter 4:8
8 Above all, maintain constant love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.

1 Corinthians 13:13
13 Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love — but the greatest of these is love.

  1. If you haven’t read the book, 5 love languages by Gary Chapman it is good information about specifically identifying what love means on a practical level
