Authentic Christians seek to follow Jesus in every way. Like Jesus did when he walked the earth, we seek to totally give ourselves to God. He is our king. He wants what is best for us. He wants what is best for everyone else too, and the way we live our lives impacts others.
The way we react when difficult times come impacts not only us but others as well. The way we show — or don’t show — hospitality to others affects them. The consistency of our lives points people toward Jesus, or the inconsistency of our lives pushes people away from him. The persistence of our prayers touches the heart of God and moves him to action.
You don’t live in isolation. The way you live impacts others.
Facing persecution, the first-century followers of Jesus knew that it was imperative for them to encourage one another and care for one another. And they did! Here is what one leader wrote to a group of Christ-followers:
Romans 12:11-14
11 Do not lack diligence in zeal; be fervent in the Spirit; serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. 13 Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
When you have diligence to continue on in your faith day after day, it is inspiring. When you are red-hot for God, sensing the Holy Spirit working in you and through you, you notice and others notice. This propels you to serve the Lord any way that you can and anywhere that you can. You glorify him by your life and you find ways to serve others.
When you totally give yourself to God, you will rejoice with hope in God, even in difficult times. You will persevere and be patient in the midst of afflictions. Your prayer life will be strong.
When you totally give yourself to God, you will find ways to meet people’s needs. If they need a meal, you will provide it. You will welcome them into your home. You will show genuine, Christ-honoring hospitality to them, better than the best hotels you have ever stayed in.
When you totally give yourself to God, you will follow Jesus in the way that you deal with those who declare themselves to be your enemies. You will not fight against them or seek vengeance on them. No, rather you will offer words of blessing to them. You will pray for them. You will love them. You will tell them that in Christ they can find salvation and peace.
Totally give yourself to God. It is totally worth it.
